Completed suicides account for 30,000 deaths in the US per year. Only about half of people who complete suicide are significantly depressed at the time they do it. The greatest predictor of completed suicide is the previous history of a suicide attempt. Other risk factors include being a man over age 65 who is unmarried and socially isolated. The risk goes up substantially if there is use of substances (illicit drugs or alcohol abuse), access to firearms or a family history of suicide. Sometimes losing a job, falling out of a relationship or developing a serious physical illness can make the individual begin to feel hopeless leading to faulty reasoning which can result in suicidal thoughts.
