POLYNEUROPATHY |
Introduction6% of the US population have polyneuropathy. There are two forms: acquired and hereditary. In general, the acquired form is far more likely to produce the painful burning and tingling discomfort of the feet.
In the US, 43% of all cases of polyneuropathy are due to diabetes. Other causes include nutritional disorders, toxicity from certain medications, autoimmune disorders and some forms of cancer. 35% of the time, no treatable cause can be identified and the term Idiopathic Polyneuropathy is applied. Fortunately, there are a number of prescription medications available to assuage the neuropathic pain. Some over the counter creams can be beneficial although most individuals respond better to medicated ointments that penetrate deeper into the dermis. Ongoing studies show support for use of certain vitamins to prevent progression of symptoms and in some cases result in recovery of peripheral nerves. |
