DIABETES

Introduction

8% of the US population has diabetes.  Diabetes is a consequence of the pancreas failing to produce sufficient amounts of insulin.  In order for sugar molecules to be transported out of the blood vessels and into cells, insulin is required.  If the pancreas cannot secrete enough insulin then the blood sugar concentration remains abnormally high.  These elevated levels of sugar damage the lining of the blood vessels ultimately leading to narrowing which reduces perfusion of organs.  The retina, kidneys, and peripheral nerves are affected early.
