Fibromyalgia affects 2% of the population. It is a syndrome of generalized pain associated with evidence of widespread local tenderness. Co-existing symptoms include fatigue, non-refreshed or disturbed sleep, morning stiffness, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Raynaud’s phenomenon, headache, subjective swelling, paresthesias, psychological abnormality, and even back pain with radiation to knees. Many of the abnormalities are a consequence of severe muscle deconditioning. Treatment consists of application of local heat and massage, local injections of anesthetics or steroids and use of oral medication. Obtaining a restoring night’s sleep is paramount to ultimate recovery.
